Dr Mulinda Nyirenda is a senior specialist in Emergency Medicine and Internal medicine within the Malawian Ministry of Health and holds a senior lecturer post in the school of Medicine at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS). She functions as a vibrant clinical care provider, keen educator and avid researcher in health care. Her work experience covers clinical care, acute care systems development, emergency response systems development, health care worker training, quality improvement, clinical research, medical education, leadership and management. Her key achievements have been establishment of the first modernized adult emergency department in Malawi, pioneered the practice of emergency medicine in the public sector and developed the emergency medicine specialty education programs within undergraduate and postgraduate medical programs in Malawi. She is an international faculty for the certificate in emergency medicine program (CPEM) at Indus Hospital in Pakistan and a mentor on the Global Emergency Medicine Student Leadership Program as an ACEP international section member. Her clinical research portfolio includes multi-national HIV clinical trials, acute care, infectious diseases, medical education, medical Informatics and technology, and health care systems strengthening research.
She is one of the few women physician leaders in Emergency Medicine in Africa chairing the AFEM women in emergency care forum and a board member of African Federation for Emergency Medicine. She is the African Representative on the IFEM board. She is listed as one of the 100 inspiring women 2023 and the woman of substance in medicine 2023 in Malawi. She has been recognized by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) as a William Rutherford Award recipient and the society of academic emergency medicine (SAEM) as a GEMA Global Awardee in the USA.
